Brownie Troop # 5449 of the west Houston area held a fall scavenger hunt in October. They collected items from the S.T.A.A.R. wish list from many of the Deerfield subdivision residents. Items collected were taken to the West side S.T.A.A.R. ranch. The girls enjoyed hearing the sucess stories that Sharon at S.T.A.A.R. shared with them, and they especially enjoyed romping and running with some of the dogs there.

A special thanks to the students of Memorial Parkway Junior High School who collected over 1000 pounds of food for STAAR!

The Girl Scouts of Troop 5151 learned the importance of community service when they lent S.T.A.A.R. a helping hand.
Troop 5151, which consists of 17 enthusiastic girls between the ages of 10 and 12 years old, decided to perform a service project for STAAR to earn their leadership badge and pin. Troop 5151, led by Jane Kerr, and co-leaders Johnette Cummingham and Monica McMurty, hit the streets of their neighborhood one Saturday morning armed with STAAR's Wish List.
The Girl Scouts approached their neighbors, with list in hand, and told them about STAAR. and the vital services STAAR provides to homeless dogs and cats. The Girl Scouts then asked their neighbors if they could fulfill any of the wish items listed on the Wish List.
"People were extremely supportive and generous, " Monica McMurty said, "we even ran into a family who had adopted a STAAR dog."     In a four-hour period, Troop 5151 successfully secured several items needed by STAAR For example, the Girl Scouts obtained a large dog crate, a hedge trimmer, cleaning supplies, old towels and linens, trash bags, newspapers, and aluminum cans for recycling.      "The girls thought it was very cool and they really were excited about the project." Monica said, "and the fact that they were helping homeless animals really inspired them."
Of course, everyone at STAAR is grateful to Troop 5151 for all their help. "The Girl Scouts highly encourage service projects, and this was a great project for us to get involved in," Monica stated. If any Scout troops are interested in performing community service projects for STAAR, please contact us at (281)392-0927. Thanks again to Troop 5151 for their great work!
